The proposed Multi-Sport Facility (MSF) will replace the existing temporary stands and existing playing field currently known as Harbin Field. Located at mid-campus, the facility will accommodate a seating capacity of 4,500 (2,000 in the East stands and 2,500 in the West stands). A new multi-purpose field of artificial turf will allow year-round practices and games for men's and women's lacrosse, football, and men's and women's soccer. This facility will also reduce the intensity of use of Kehoe Field atop Yates Field House, thus reducing neighborhood impact.
The facility will be built in a two-phase sequence to minimize the effect on game schedules, to allow for greater integration among facility projects, and to allow more time to continue the fundraising efforts.
Phase 1A will involve the construction of the artificial turf field, East Stands, North Lawn, and the permanent and temporary fencing. The existing scoreboard will be temporarily relocated and reused.
Phase 1B will include the completion of the West stands, permanent fencing, a two-level press box, support spaces, locker rooms, video and conference rooms, training room, and other support spaces as well as a new scoreboard.
The design of the facility reinforces the overall Campus Master Plan. The new field will continue to function as an open recreational space for students when games or practices are not being held. The four entrances to the MSF at each end of the facility allow for mid-campus walks. The four gothic entry pavilions will create a strong threshold experience which echoes the architectural fabric and traditions of Georgetown. The proportions of the pavilions, colonnades, detailing and features in the design all reflect the American Gothic character of the campus.
The exterior materials will include pre-cast concrete planks for the stands with benches on the upper seating and chairback seating on the lower levels. The colonnade pilasters will be brick facing with rusticated base, stone lintels, coping and Gothic arches. The railing and balcony stringers and finials will be steel with a special coated finish. Perimeter fencing will be a combination of brick-faced masonry post with pre-cast concrete base and wrought iron. The objective in the selection of finishes is to blend with the colors and textures of the surrounding existing buildings.
