The Scoop
Georgetown stays on the road for its second straight game and opens ECAC play up at St. John's. This is the first year of lacrosse at St. John's since 1995 and will be the first league game for both programs. It will be pupil versus mentor as Rick Sowell, St. John's head coach, is a former assistant under Urick. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. The Hoyas own the all-time series lead 4-0 with the last meeting coming in 1995.
Georgetown opened the season with a loss for the second consecutive year, falling at #4 Maryland 13-6. One of the few bright spots on the day was the play of All-American LSM Brodie Merrill who consistently stripped the ball away from some of Maryland's top players and ended the day with a game high 13 groundballs. Returning attackmen Sean Denihan and Trevor Casey each netted two tallies against Maryland and they teamed up for GU's first goal of the contest, which gave the Hoyas an early 1-0 lead. Maryland's goalie played a superb game making 23 saves, the most saves against Georgetown since a NCAA First Round game against Manhattan in 2002 (24). Four freshmen saw significant action in the opener as Matt McBride got the start on attack and midfielder Scott Kahoe, attack Andrew Baird, defenseman Craig Stevenson and goalie Miles Kass all added to the Hoya cause for the first time.
St. John's earned its first win in the season opener against Robert Morris, 8-7. At Fairfield the Red Storm did not fare as well falling 17-5. The leading goal scorers for SJU are Justin O'Donnell with four and Mike McGuire, Jack Rosson and Patrick Zeis with two apiece. In two games goalie Matthew Duca has amassed 23 saves but allowed 24 goals.
