QUEENS, NY - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team defeated ECAC foe St. John's University 16-6 this afternoon in front of more than 600 fans at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, NY. Georgetown improves to 1-1 (1-0 ECAC), while St. John's falls to 1-2 (0-1 ECAC).
Georgetown led early in the game, firing off four straight goals before former Hoya Mike McGuire answered above the crease with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. St. John's started the scoring early in the second quarter, to make the game 4-2, yet Georgetown's Brodie Merrill answered back eight seconds later, increasing the lead to three.
Up 8-3 at halftime and after a scoreless seven minutes into the third quarter, Georgetown tallied four straight goals, before St. John's answered back to cut the lead to nine. The Hoyas responded with another 4-0 run, until the Red Storm scored two more goals to end the game 16-6.
Georgetown was led by Sean Denihan, Peter Cannon, Matt McBride, Nick Miaritis, and Trevor Casey who each scored two goals apiece. Goalie Rich D'Andrea tallied seven saves.
Freshman Justin O'Donnell led the Red Storm with three goals and one assists while captain Mike McGuire added one goal, one assist. Goalie Matthew Duca recorded 11 saves for St. John's.
Georgetown outshot St. John's, 47-25, and held the edge in groundballs, 35-27.
Georgetown returns to action next Saturday, March 12, when they will travel to Los Angeles, California to face Syracuse University. Face off is set for 10:30 p.m. (EST) at the Home Depot Center.
