Men's Lacrosse Top ECAC Lacrosse League Preseason Honors

February 22, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University men's lacrosse team has had three student-athletes named to the ECAC Preseason All-League squad, as well as an ECAC Defensive Player of the Year selection. Senior captain Brodie Merrill , junior Sean Denihan, and Andy Corno have all been selected to the squad.

Georgetown's Merrill has been tabbed the ECAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, as well as being named a defender in the ECAC Preseason squad. The long stick midfielder has been named to the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch list, released by the Tewaaraton Foundation as an early season indicator of 37 candidates who may contend for the post-season award given to the nation's top player. Merrill was one of five 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy finalists and a STX/USILA First Team All-American selection last season, in addition to being named to the 2004 All-ECAC First Team. The Hoyas, who are picked to win this year's ECAC title, have given this year's captain honors to their top defensive stopper.

Junior Sean Denihan was named for first team honors as attackmen. Denihan tallied 29 points for the Hoyas in 2004 and is Georgetown's top returning scorer. A starter in all 15 games in 2004, Denihan was second on the team in assists, tallying 13.

Senior captain Andy Corno was named as an midfielder in ECAC Preseason squad. Corno was a 2004 STX/USILA Second Team All-American selection and led the nation in face-off win percentage. Like Merrill, Corno was identified as one of 37 men named to the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Corno scooped up 105 groundballs in 2004 for the highest season total ever at Georgetown, as well as winning 186 face-offs.

After claiming the ECAC Championship in 2004, the Hoyas are the preseason favorites for the second time in three years. Massachusetts, this year's second vote-getter, tallied two players plus the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Penn State will host the 2005 ECAC Lacrosse League Opener March 13 at Harbin Field as the Nittany Lions host the defending champion Georgetown Hoyas.

Established in 1999, the ECAC Lacrosse League is a Division I men's lacrosse league. Charter members Georgetown, Massachusetts, Penn State, and Rutgers will welcome expansion members in 2005 to reach seven members strong. The league welcomes Hobart College, Loyola College (Md.) and St. John's University. In 2006, Fairfield University will join the League.

The Hoyas open up their 2005 season Saturday, February 26 at the University of Maryland. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
