WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University women's basketball team (12-15; 7-9) fought off an impassioned late run by the Orange (12-15; 4-12), holding on to win 73-67 and capturing the sixth seed in the BIG EAST Championship. A pair of senior leaders led the Hoyas on senior night. Varda Tamoulianis led all scorers with 21 points, and Mary Lisicky hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the Georgetown win.
The Hoyas exploded out of the gate, scoring the first 13 points of the game and building their lead to 18 by the end of the first half. The Hoyas maintained their lead throughout the beginning of the second half, and led by 21 with 10:18 remaining when Syracuse started their push.
The Orange, aided by 6 of 12 three point shooting in the second half, outscored the Hoyas 28-11 over the next eight minutes and trailed by only four with two minutes remaining. Undeterred, the Hoyas responded with a big bucket by Kieraah Marlow and two big defensive stops and forced Syracuse into a fouling situation with less than a minute left. Lisicky, who was earlier honored as Georgetown's all-time free throw percentage leader, missed her first foul shot, but calmly sank the next five to seal the victory.
Tamoulianis was dominant in the paint all day, and the Hoyas also received offensive help from Bethany LeSueur with 14 points, Marlow with 13 and Lisicky with 12. Tamoulianis, LeSueur and Marlow all recorded double-doubles, with 11, 11 and 10 rebounds respectively.
The Orange out shot the Hoyas 45%-37%, but were out rebounded 47-34. This led to the Hoyas attempting nine more field goals and 21 more free throws in the game. The Hoyas also forced 13 turnovers while committing only nine.
With the regular season at an end, the sixth seeded Hoyas and the 11th seeded Orange will travel to the Hartford Civic Center for a rematch in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas are 3-0 all time against the Orange in the BIG EAST Tournament. Game time is set for Saturday, March 5, at 8 p.m.
