QUEENS, NY--The Georgetown University women's basketball team (10-15, 5-9 BE) defeated St. John's (17-8, 6-8 BE) 64-57 Tuesday night at the Carnesecca Arena . This was the 11th straight game the Hoyas have defeated the Red Storm. The night was an impressive night for the Hoyas in the record books. Senior captain Mary Lisicky, who totaled seven points, moved into 10th place on Georgetown's all time scoring list with 1, 268 points after nailing her first three pointer of the day. In addition to Lisicky, senior Varda Tamoulianis claimed the Georgetown single season record in blocks with 53, after knocking down four tonight. Junior Bethany LeSueur continued her scoring barrage, as she netted 13 for her ninth consecutive double-digit game.
Georgetown jumped to an early 18-11 margin midway through the first half, behind 4-for-4 shooting from behind the arc, including three by sophomore Kate Carlin. St. John's followed with four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 18-15 with 7:54remaining. The Hoyas held the Red Storm scoreless over the next 4:24 to open up their largest lead of the game at 29-15. Yet St. John's chipped away at the lead to end the half gave Georgetown a 33-23 lead into the break.
The Red Storm came out with more intensity in the second frame, as they scored the first eight points and put together a 19-4 to open the half, taking a 42-37 lead with 15:03 left. Yet, the St. John's lead did not hold as Georgetown fought back and went on an 18-4 run of the own over the next 8:50 to put the game away. The Red Storm came within three in the last minute, but the Hoyas hit seven of their last eight free throws in the last minute to hold on for the 64-57 win.
Three Hoyas scored in double-digits as Carlin led the Hoyas with 16 points, including 14 in the first half. Freshman Kieraah Marlow added 14 and LeSueur chipped in 13. Freshman Kristin Heidloff led the Hoyas in rebounding, grabbing nine boards.
The Red Storm posted four players in double-figures, but only shot 30.0% from the field and 25.0% from behind the arc. Greeba Barlow led the Red Storm with 16 points.
Georgetown will next host Villanova on Saturday, February 26, at 2 p.m.
