Georgetown (17-11) defeated Seton Hall (12-16) in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament by a score of 56-51. Brandon Bowman paced all scorers with 16 points and Darrel Owens contributed 14 tallies. Jeff Green led both teams in rebounding with 9 boards.
In the first frame there were 5 ties, 6 lead changes and never more than 7 points separated the teams. The Hoyas shot 40% but allowed the Hall to hit 43.5% from the field. GU won the battle of the boards 14-11, but committed 2 more turnovers.
In the second stanza the Hoyas had fallen behind by 11, 33-44 at the 8:32 mark when back to back treys by Darrel Owens snapped Georgetown back into the game. GU outscored the Pirates 23- 7 in the closing minutes for the 56-51 win.
For the game Georgetown won the battle of the boards 29-23. The Hoyas also hit 52.6% of their attempts from beyond the arc while allowing the Pirates only 37.5%. GU did have 4 more turnovers than the Pirates. The Hoyas advanced to a quarter final matchup with the #12 ranked Huskies of Connectcut.
