PISCATAWAY, NJ - Georgetown's men's tennis team defeated St. John's 4-3 at the Rutgers University Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 9. It was Georgetown's first dual match victory over the Red Storm since 1992.
Georgetown won the team point awarded for the doubles competition to open the match. 8-4 victories by the #1 doubles team of Erik Bildman (Brookline, MA/Roxbury Latin) and Eric Conrad (Gloucester, MA/St. John's Prep) and the #3 doubles team of Andrew Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall- St. Mark's) and Scott Maucher (Mount Pleasant, N.C./Bishop England) gave the Hoyas the early 1-0 lead.
In the singles competition, Georgetown extended the team point lead to 2-0 when Maucher won the #2 singles match 6-0,6-1. St. John's then won the #1 singles match, but Georgetown made the team score 3-1 when Etienne Paris (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades) won the #3 singles match 7-5,6-2. St. John's then won two extremely close matches defeating Hoya Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, FL/Melbourne Central Catholic) at #4 singles 3-6,6-1,6-3 and Hoya Conrad at #5 singles 7-6,1-6,6-2. With the team score tied at 3-3, the only match remaining on court featured Georgetown's Scott Faust (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades) at the #6 singles position. Faust rallied after a difficult first set loss to turn his match around, winning 1-6,6-1,6-4, and claiming the decisive fourth team point.
With the unexpected victory over St. John's, Georgetown closes their BIG EAST regular season with a Conference record of 3 wins and 2 losses. Selection and seeding for the BIG EAST Conference Championships will occur on Monday, April 18. Georgetown is expected to receive a berth in the Conference Championship to be held at the University of South Florida April 21-23. The Hoyas expect their first match to be Thursday in the quarterfinal round. The semifinal round is scheduled for Friday with the championship scheduled for Saturday.
Georgetown, with a regular season dual match record of 5 wins and 6 losses, has two non-conference regular season matches remaining before the Conference Championship. On Tuesday, April 13, Georgetown travels to Delaware to face a solid Blue Hen team. And then Georgetown closes the regular season on the home McDonough Courts on Saturday April 16 when they face Longwood.
