WASHINGTON, DC -- The women's tennis team closed out their BIG EAST regular season schedule with a 5-2 loss to Rutgers at Georgetown's McDonough Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon April 10.

Georgetown opened the match with a solid doubles victory by Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) and Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, NY/DeWitt) at #3 doubles. Then Georgetown received a magnificent come from behind victory at #1 doubles by Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) and Adriann Gin (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School). Bartell and Gin not only fell behind 3-6, they also fought off three match points at 6-7. After taking the lead for the first time in the match in the tiebreak at 8-8, the Hoya tandem recorded their third BIG EAST doubles win at the #1 position.

Georgetown had a 1-0 lead as the singles competition began. Bartell made it 2-0 with a 6-3,6-1 win at #2 singles. But Rutgers responded to take the #6, #5 and #4 singles matches in straight sets. With the team score 3-2 in favor of Rutgers, Georgetown held slight advantages at #3 and #1 singles where Gin and Cohen, respectively, won their first sets. But Rutgers fought with all their might to overturn the advantage and succeeded as Gin was defeated 6-7(4),6-2,6-3 and Cohen fell 4-6,7-6(3),6-4. The final score in the 4 1/2 hour match was Georgetown-2, Rutgers-5.

With the loss, Georgetown's final 2005 regular season BIG EAST record is 3 wins, 4 losses. Selection for the 2005 BIG EAST Conference Championship will be done Wednesday April 13. Although the Hoyas won three crucial BIG EAST matches, Georgetown is not expected to receive a berth to the Conference Championship.
