BLOOMFIELD, CT -- The Georgetown women's tennis team won their third BIG EAST Conference match of the season and defeated Connecticut for only the second time in the last decade when the Hoyas downed the Huskies by a 4-3 score Saturday evening in Bloomfield, Connecticut. On Sunday, the Hoyas were hosted at the Flynn Recreation Complex indoor tennis courts by the Boston College Eagles. The Eagles were unwelcome hosts as they won all three doubles matches and the six singles matches for a 7-0 victory.
Georgetown opened the UConn match with a terrific performance in the doubles competition. The #3 doubles team of Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) and Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, NY/DeWitt) won by an 8-5 score and shortly after their match was over, Kristin Dew (Nashville, TN/Webb School) and Sana Malouf (McLean, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) won the #2 doubles match by an 8-6 score.
Holding a 1-0 lead by virtue of winning the doubles competition, the singles competition began and Georgetown quickly added a second team point as Cohen won the #1 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Connecticut rebounded to tie the team score at 2-2 as the Huskies #2 and #3 singles players downed Hoyas Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) and Adriann Gin (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School). Connecticut then took a 3-2 lead as Hoya Dew lost the #4 singles match 3-6, 3-6. Georgetown then received a very solid performance from Malouf at #5 singles, who came through to win 7-6, 6-1, tying the team score at 3-3. The final match of the BIG EAST battle saw Hoya Boyle, playing at the #6 singles position, take the first set and secure three match points in the second set against her opponent. UConn's Petruzzi fought back to win the second set despite the deficit, but Boyle was not to be denied. She won the final set by a 6-4 score, giving Georgetown the team match by a 4-3 score.
Georgetown's record in BIG EAST Conference play climbed to 3-2 with the win over Connecticut.
The following day at B.C. team captain Bartell played a fantastic singles match at the #2 position in a losing effort, falling in three sets.
Georgetown's record now stands at 3-3 in BIG EAST Conference play with remaining conference matches against West Virginia and Rutgers scheduled for next weekend.
This week Georgetown hosts local rival Howard on Tuesday afternoon at the McDonough Complex. Georgetown will be looking to post a 4-0 in-season dual match record over local rivals George Washington, American, George Mason and Howard for the first time since 1991 with a victory over the Bison.
