NEWARK, DE - Georgetown women's soccer (7-1-1) win their fifth straight game today against Delaware (3-2-2) in a 2-0 shutout to win the 2005 Delaware Blue Hen adidas Classic. This marks the second tournament the Hoyas have won in 2005 having already won the 2005 Hoya Classic.
The Hoyas were aggressive in the first half of play today, doubling the shots taken by Delaware with six. It was in the 29th minute of play that a shot connected when sophomore defender Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, MD) passed the ball to senior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, CA) who scored first for the Hoyas today. The Hoyas would their 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Hens came out with more aggression in the second half taking nine shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, NY) recorded all five saves on the day in the second half of play. Even with the Hen offense making more attempts, the Hoya defense led by Ashley Darcy (Coral Springs, FL) and the efforts of Higgins, Georgetown held off Delaware. At 64:03 junior Shante Cofield (Summit, NJ) extended the Hoya lead to two off the assist by sophomore Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, IN). The Hoyas shutout Delaware 2-0 to win the Delaware Blue Hen adidas Classic.
Goalkeeper Higgins records her seventh win and fifth shutout of the season with five saves today.
Seniors Darcy, Hardy and McNeill as well as sophomore Lindsey Appezzato (Davis, CA) all made the All-Tournament Team following the completion of the last game.
The Hoyas return to BIG EAST action this Friday, September 23 in Piscataway NJ to take on Rutgers University at 7p.m.
