Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's swimming and diving team improved to 7-4 after defeating the American Eagles, 155-84, today at the Reeves Aquatic Center on American's campus. The men's team lost, 128-105, on American's senior day and drop to 3-5 on the season.
For the women, freshman diver Jessica Rettig (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University High) gave a stellar performance on the board as she set a new school record in the one meter diving event with a score of 255.98, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships. The record was previously held by her teammate, sophomore Kelcey Moore (Arlington, Va./The Madeira School). Fellow diver, sophomore Katie Oldham (Verdi, Nev./McQueen), took the three-meter diving event with a score of 247.05.
Senior tri-captain Corinne Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) delivered two first-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 25.90, and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.99. Also finishing first for the Hoyas were sophomores Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle, respectively.
The Hoya women took both relay events; Nugent teamed up with sister, junior Liz Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School), Rhodes and Colling to take the 400 medley relay, timing in at 4:05.70. In the 400 freestyle relay, senior tri-captain Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep), sophomore Megan Maragakes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), sophomore Kelcy Poulson (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and senior Julie Dougherty (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) won the event with a convincing time of 3:50.51, almost 14 seconds ahead of American's second-place quartet.
On the men's side, senior diver Santini Reali (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View) swept both the one and three meter diving events and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the one meter with a score of 269.18.
Georgetown's presence was felt in the 100 freestyle as three of the top four finishers were Hoyas - sophomore Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), senior tri-captain Don Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and freshman Brian Badala (San Anselmo, Calif./Drake) finished in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Also delivering a strong performance for the Hoyas was freshman Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) who came in second place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.78, just under two seconds behind the leader, AU's Steve Brennan.
The Hoyas return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 28 when they host Lafayette at McCarthy Pool.
