WASHINGTON, DC - Cappie Pondexter scored 24 points and Essence Carson added 13 to lead No. 10 Rutgers to a 65-51 win over Georgetown on Saturday, the 15th straight BIG EAST win for the Scarlet Knights.
Mariota Theodoris added eight rebounds and Kia Vaughn had five blocked shots as Rutgers (15-3, 7-0) picked up its third straight win.
Pondexter, who entered the week second in the nation in scoring, was 9-of-16 from the field.
Georgetown (8-11, 1-7) was led by Katrina Wheeler (Washington, DC/T. Roosevelt) who had 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and added 12 rebounds. Wheeler, a freshman, now has six double-doubles on the season. Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) had a season-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, tying a career-high. The Hoyas' top scorer, Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Penn./Coatesville), who averages 16.9 points per game, made one of 10 shots and finished with seven points.
Georgetown led 14-12 midway through the first half before Rutgers went on a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a 28-14 lead. Rutgers led by 13 at halftime, and Georgetown never got closer than nine points for the rest of the game.
Despite the loss, the Hoyas outrebounded Rugters, 34-31, and hit 15-of-17 from the free throw line.
The Hoyas return to action on February 1 when they visit Pittsburgh. Tipoff at the Petersen Events Center is set for 7:30 pm.
