Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's basketball continued its climb up the national polls, winning a pair of games last week and moving up to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press Top-25, released Monday afternoon.
The Hoyas, 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST Conference, also made their first appearance in the ESPN/USA Today Top-25 poll, tabbed at No. 22 overall.
The No. 17 ranking in the AP poll is the highest the team has been ranked since appearing at No. 15 in February 2001.
Georgetown won its fourth-straight game, and for the 13th time in the last 15 games on Saturday, when sophomore forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists in a 76-57 win over Cincinnati.
Green, who scored 12 points, had seven rebounds and recorded six assists in an 85-82 double overtime win at Notre Dame last Tuesday, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as a result of his performance. He averaged 16.0 points, seven rebounds and 5.5 assists during the two games, committing no turnovers in 79 minutes played.
It is the second-straight week a Hoya player has been named to the league's weekly honor roll, as senior forward Brandon Bowman (Santa Monica, Calif./Westchester) was tabbed last week after helping to lead Georgetown to an 87-84 win over then-No. 1 Duke.
The Hoyas also rank among the nation's leaders in several statistical categories. Through January 23, Georgetown ranked 25th in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 59.8 points per game. GU also ranked 16th in the nation in field goal percentage, connecting on 48.9 percent of its shots. In the next set of rankings, the Hoyas could be among the top-50 in the nation in three-point field goals made per game (7.5) and assists (16.1).
The Hoyas hit the road on Monday, traveling to play at DePaul on Tuesday night. Tipoff at the Allstate Arena is slated for 8:30 p.m EST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Classic and can be heard live on 1260 AM, with Rich Chvotkin calling the action.
