Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving team suffered a loss to Delaware today at McCarthy Pool. The men lost, 149-75 and drop to a 0-2 dual meet record while the women suffered their first dual meet loss of the season and even their record at 1-1 with a 150-88 loss.
On the men's side, sophomore standout Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) took first place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.49. Sophomore co-captain Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) swam to first place in the 200 breaststroke, timing in at 2:19.26. The 400 freestyle relay quartet of Robinson and freshmen Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High), James LiVolsi (Scotch Plains, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and John Deppe (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) took a top finish with a tie of 3:25.62. Going also qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the 2000 backstroke.
For the women, freshman Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) had an impressive two first place finishes. She won the 400 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke. The 200 breaststroke was an event the Hoyas were able to take charge of as Stark was followed by fellow freshman Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barstable), sophomore Christina DiNapoli (Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart) and freshman Corina Kwami (Titusville, N.J./The Pennington School) in second, third and fourth, respectively. The women also took the top spots in the 400 freestyle relay with the quartet of freshman Margaret Kimball (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), sophomore Katelyn O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and juniors Megan Maragakes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) taking the event with a time of 3:50.50. The relay squad of freshmen Suzanne Waller (Darien, Conn./Darien), Francesca Pirog (New York, N.Y./The Brearley School), Tara Powers (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Mary McGuire (Port Chester, N.Y./Sacred Heart) were right behind them for second. Junior diver Katie Oldham (Verdi, Nev./McQueen) took the one meter diving event with 212.18 points.
Stark broke the school record in the 400 individual medley, set in 2002 and also broke the pool record in the 200 breaststroke, set in 1999. Freshman Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the 200 backstroke.
The Hoyas return to the water on Saturday, November 4 when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for a meet at Loyola (Md.) and against BIG EAST Conference opponent Seton Hall. The meet is slated for 2 p.m.
