Men's basketball at Georgetown University began in the 1906-07 season. The celebration of the 100th year of Georgetown men's basketball is now underway. Hoya fans are encouraged to visit the basketball commerative site by visiting www.guhoyas.com and clicking on the 100-year logo.
The interactive site offers Georgetown fans the opportunity to experience the history and highlights - including the great names and the great games - of one of the most storied programs in Division I basketball.
A much anticipated feature of the site will be an area where fans can vote for the program's All-Century Team. This team will consist of 25 players from three distinct generations of Georgetown Basketball - Vintage (1907-43), Classic (1943-72) and Modern (1972-present). Each candidate profile will have a short biography and an accompanying picture.
The Hoyas played four games during their inaugural season, 1906-07, winning two of them. The program quickly established itself as one of the leading teams in the East, advancing to the Final Four in 1942-43 and to the National Invitation Tournament in 1953 and 1970. In 1972, John Thompson, Jr. was named the program's head coach and he guided the team to at least 20 wins in 19 of 24 seasons, three National Championship games, including the 1984 NCAA title.
