Washington, D.C. -- Visiting Old Dominion connected on 58 percent of its second half field goals, including six three-pointers, and topped No. 8 Georgetown, 75-62, in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,500 at McDonough Arena on Sunday night. The loss ended a 23-game win streak for the Hoyas in their on-campus home.
Georgetown falls to 2-1 this season, while the Monarchs improve to 3-1.
The loss was Georgetown's first at McDonough Arena since a 63-52 loss to Connecticut on January 20, 1982.
The Hoyas had led by four points (31-27) at the half and were up by two points (36-34) early in the second half when they scored six-straight points to take an eight-point lead, 42-34, on a layup from junior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep). ODU, however, outscored Georgetown 11-2 over a span of 2:34 and took the lead for good at 45-44 after a jumper from Brandon Johnson with 12:53 left to play in the game.
That spurt was the start of a run during which Old Dominion out-scored Georgetown 24-5 over 8:47, taking an 11-point lead (58-47) on a layup from Valdas Vasylius with 6:40 to play. During the 24-5 run, the Monarchs connected on five-consecutive three-pointers, with Arnaud Dahi hitting a pair and Jonathan Adams, Johnson and Vasylius with one apiece.
Georgetown would pull to within seven points, 60-53, on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy [Md.[), but Old Dominion connected on 12 of 14 free throws in the final 1:37 to seal the 13-point win.
With a raucous crowd of students behind them, the Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead in the first half, scoring the opening five points of the game after a layup from Hibbert and a natural three-point play from Sapp. The Monarchs, with a starting lineup of three seniors and two juniors, was not daunted and fought back to tie the game at 5-all after a layup from Adams and a three-pointer from Drew Williamson.
The Hoyas went on a 10-2 run over a span of 6:15 and took a 15-7 lead on a layup from sophomore forward Marc Egerson (Wilmington, Del./Glasgow). GU matched its biggest lead of the half at 18-10 after a three-pointer from Sapp, but the Monarchs scored nine-straight points and took a 19-18 lead on a three-pointer from Brian Henderson with 6:02 to play in the half.
The game was tied at 21-all after a layup from Abdi Lidonde, but the Hoyas scored seven-straight points - a layup from junior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman), a three from DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and a basket from Hibbert - to take a 28-21 lead with 2:27 to play before the break. The lead was at six points, 29-23, after Hibbert hit one of two free throws, but a jumper from Dahi with one second left before halftime gave the Hoyas a 31-27 lead.
Georgetown put four players in double figures, led by Hibbert, who had 17 points and eight rebounds. Egerson had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Sapp chipped in 16 points and Wallace finished with 13 points.
ODU put four players in double figures and had nine players score at least two points. Vasylius finished with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while Dahi added 15 points and six boards, Johnson had 14 points and five assists and Adams chipped in 10 points.
The Hoyas connected on 48.9 percent of their field goals (23-of-47), 31.6 percent from three-point land (6-of-19) and 62.5 percent of their free throws (10-of-16). ODU shot 42.9 percent from the field (24-of-56), 56.3 from outside the arc (9-of-16) and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (18-of-24).
