Georgetown Men's Basketball Continues Homestand Wednesday vs. Towson

Dec. 19, 2006

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's basketball will play the fourth game of a season-long five-game home stand on Wednesday night, hosting Towson University at Verizon Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the game can be heard locally on SportsTalk 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin calling all of the action.

The Hoyas are coming off a 76-32 win over Winston-Salem State this past weekend at McDonough Arena as the team improved to 7-3 this season. It was the third-straight win for the Blue and Gray. The 32 points scored by the Rams were the fewest by a Georgetown opponent since a 77-30 win over Grambling State on December 6, 1985. It was the lowest output for a Georgetown opponent under third-year head coach John Thompson III and it was the second-lowest total by an opponent against a Thompson-coached team. Sophomore guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian [Md.] Academy) scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to lead four players in double figures in the win.

Georgetown, winners of three-straight games, has been led by a balanced effort, with four players in double figures in scoring, 10 players averaging at least 2.0 points per game, six players averaging at least 2.0 rebounds and three players handing out at least 3.0 assists per game.

Junior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. Hibbert has connected on 66.2 percent of his shots from the field and has blocked 30 shots. Junior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game, third in assists with 3.2 and leads the team with 20 three-pointers.

Junior forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) is third on the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game, is second in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game and is second with 3.5 assists per game. Sapp is the fourth player in double figures, averaging 10.4 points. He leads the team with 3.6 assists and is also grabbing 3.5 rebounds per game.

Towson enters tonight's game with a 5-4 overall record. The Tigers are coming off of a 75-70 loss at home to Temple. They have won two of their last three games, beating Vermont (67-54) and William & Mary (73-60). Towson is under the direction of third year head coach Pat Kennedy, who ranks among the top-25 for active winning coaches. Senior guard Gary Neal is the only player in double figures for the Tigers. He leads the team in scoring with 22.2 points per game. Neal is shooting 38.5 percent from the floor and has a team-high 24 three-pointers. Neal is also averaging 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Senior Dennard Abraham, a 6-8, 245-pound forward, is second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points and is second on the team with 7.1 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Tim Crossin is third on the team in scoring with 7.1 points and is averaging 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Senior forward Winstonn Tubbs is fourth on the team in scoring with 6.8 points and is grabbing a team-leading 7.9 rebounds per game. Junior forward Tommy Breaux is fifth on the team with 5.4 points and is adding 3.6 rebounds. Towson is averaging 65.9 points per game and allowing 66.8 per game. They hold a 34.3 to 34.1 advantage on the boards and are averaging 15.0 turnovers per game.

This is the first meeting between Georgetown and Towson since the 2002-03 season, when the Hoyas posted an 81-52 win at home. The teams have met twice before, with Georgetown winning both meetings. They first met in 2001-02, a 91-40 GU win. The Hoyas are 1-0 at Verizon Center against the Tigers.
