I Grew up in the Shadow of the 900-Foot Jesus This is certainly not John Thompson Jr.'s out-of-conference schedule. After a difficult schedule that has included Vanderbilt, Oregon, Old Dominion and Duke, the Hoyas have another out-of-conference test against the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts.
This game has special meaning for me. Oral Roberts University is located in south Tulsa. I grew up and went to high school less than a mile from ORU. As an undersized center, I remember former Oral Roberts coach Bill Self yelling things at me like "Get big, Medlock", "Faster Medlock, drop-step faster" at his annual summer high school basketball camp. I am also lucky to count the Finkbeiner family as friends - Jerry Finkbeiner is the coach of the Lady Golden Eagles.
This is one of the great things about the national scope of Georgetown men's basketball under John Thompson III - it seems clear that we will go anywhere and play anyone and recruit in any area.
As for the game on Saturday, Georgetown fans will be treated to a great game between two teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year. Two coaches who are sons-of-legends will stalk the sidelines (Scott Sutton, son of Eddie Sutton is the coach of ORU) and two players named Green who will post amazing stat lines (ORU's forward Caleb Green is a past all-Mid Con Conference performer and was featured on the pre-season Wooden Award list).
I'll see you in section 118.
