Pittsburgh, Pa. - Sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 16th career double-double but the Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a 79-62 decision at Pittsburgh. Georgetown fell to 8-12, 1-8 in the BIG EAST.
Senior Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) each finished with 14 points and the duo combined for nine assists.
The Hoyas shot 42 percent from the floor, their best output in the last five games, but GU was outrebounded 45-27 for the contest and yielded 23 offensive rebounds.
In the second half, LeSueur hit a baseline jumper to cut Pittsburgh's lead to 49-44 with 11:47 to go in the game.
But Pittsburgh's Mercedes Walker scored 10 of the Panther's next 11 points to extend the home team's lead to 58-46 with 8:07 left as the Hoyas were held scoreless over a four-plus minute span.
Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) kept GU close with three straight field goals to cut the Hoya deficit to 63-52 but that would be as close as Georgetown would get.
The Hoyas had their best first half shooting performance in 14 games, making 52 percent of their field goals (11-21) and trailed 33-29 at halftime. The difference in the opening period for Pittsburgh was the 11 points they tallied off 11 GU first half turnovers.
GU took an 11-6 lead with Marlow (6) and LeSueur (5) combining for all the team's points, while the Hoyas held Pitt to just 4-11 shooting through the opening 9:10.
Pitt went on an 8-0 as the Hoyas went scoreless for the next three minutes and the Panthers took a 16-11 edge. Over the next four minutes, Pittsburgh extended their lead to 28-18 with 4:02 left.
Georgetown cut its deficit to six points, 28-22 with 2:25 remaining in the half on a Marlow transition layin.
Georgetown had won six straight games in Pittsburgh coming into tonight.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday, February 4 when the Hoyas host Seton Hall in a BIG EAST game that tips at 3 p.m at McDonough Arena.
