Football Reception in New York City
On Wednesday, March 10, 2004, the Gridiron Club held a reception, sponsored by Peter Hornick B?90 and Elizabeth Leahy C'91, at Metro 53 in New York City. Over 50 alumni and friends of Georgetown football turned out to see head coach Bob Benson, and assistant coaches Mike Mattia C'01 and Aaron Brady. Joe Lang, the Director of Athletics, and Coach Benson spoke to the group, thanking them for their continued support of the program. Thank you to Peter and Elizabeth for hosting the event.
Hoya Stick Club Alumnae Event
On Saturday, April 3, 2004, Bernie Robinson, father of goalkeeper Sarah Robinson F'04, hosted a reception for Hoya Stick Club members and significant supporters at his home in Washington, D.C. Over 20 donors and alumnae came out to celebrate, honoring the past, present, and future of the Georgetown Women?s Lacrosse program. Head Coach Kim Simons individually thanked all those present for their help in making Georgetown one of the premier lacrosse programs in the nation. Thank you to Mr. Robinson for hosting the wonderful evening.
Hoop Club Honors 1942-1943 Men's Basketball Team
Over 200 Hoop Club members and their families came out to honor the 1942-43 Men's Basketball Team on Saturday, February 7 at the Acela Club in the MCI Center prior to Georgetown's win over Miami University. The 1942-43 team is Georgetown?s first Final Four team. This was the third consecutive year that the Hoop Club has held an in-season event to honor a past team. Two years ago the 1951-52 team, the first team to play in McDonough Gym, was honored and last year a brunch was held for the first BIG EAST Championship team, the 1979-80 squad.
Hoop Club President Michael Karam F'72, L'76, L'82 opened the reception by welcoming all those in attendance including basketball alumni Chris Wilson C'48 G'59, George Antone C'49, John Brown F'50, Hugh Beins C'53 Tom Coleman C'61 L'64 L'70, Brian 'Puddy' Sheehan C'61, Jim Barry C'66, Jim Brown B'66, John Gibbons C'66, Albert Parrow F'70, Mark Edwards B'73, Craig ?Big Sky? Shelton B?80 and Eric Smith C'82. He then turned the program over to Athletics Director Joe Lang who spoke about the outstanding accomplishments of the 1942-43 team and introduced the five players in attendance. Dan Gabbianelli F'43, Congressman Henry Hyde C'47, Andy Kostecka F'44, Dan Kraus C'48 and James 'Miggs' Reilly C'47 were each presented with a special Georgetown University citation for their special achievement.
During halftime of the game, the five players were introduced at center court and received a great ovation from the game crowd. A photo slide show on the arena's telescreen accompanied the presentation by Michael Karam and Joe Lang. They presented the former captain, Dan Kraus, with the NCAA National Runnerup trophy, the same trophy the team received 60 years ago.
Hoop Club Open Practice
On Saturday, November 15, over 150 Hoop Club members and their families gathered in McDonough Gymnasium for a first look at the 2003-04 Georgetown men?s basketball team. After enjoying a barbeque dinner, the Hoop Club members entered the gym to watch the players run drills and play a short intrasquad scrimmage. At the conclusion of practice, the Junior Hoya Hoop Club members in attendance got to meet their favorite Hoyas when the players held an autograph session and posed for photos. After head coach Craig Esherick (B'78, L'82) sent his players to the showers, he stuck around to answer some questions from the loyal supporters. Coach Esherick gave the fans a peek at his starting five, spoke about his 2004-05 recruiting class and got the Hoop Club members excited for the upcoming season.
Spike Shoe Club Happy Hour
On November 6 at Chadwick's in Friendship Heights, D.C. the Spiked Shoe Club held a Happy Hour for local alumni. Twenty-five supporters of the Track & Field program turned out to meet the coaching staff and celebrate the men's BIG EAST Cross Country Championship.
Men's Soccer 50th Anniversary Celebration Weekend
Over the course of Halloween Weekend, over 150 players, alumni, parents, and friends of the Men?s Soccer Team returned to Georgetown to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Soccer Program, and to honor Head Coach Keith Tabatznik for his 20 years of service to the Program. On Friday evening, alumni met at F. Scott's to share some memories. On Saturday, the current team hosted UConn, losing a hard-fought match by a score of 1-0, and later that evening, Goals Unlimited hosted a wonderful celebration in the Leavey Center. To start the evening, the dinner program honored the 50-year history of soccer on the Hilltop; the evening closed with a video tribute & 'roast' of Coach Tabatznik. Early Sunday morning, over 40 alumni returned to the soccer field for the annual alumni game. The turnout was by far the best showing for an alumni game in the history of Goals Unlimited. Immediately following, the weekend's festivities came to a close with a postgame barbecue in front of McDonough Gym. The entire weekend was a terrific celebration of Georgetown Soccer.
19th Hole Club Golf Outing
This year, the 19th Hole Club hosted an alumni golf outing in conjunction with the practice round for the Hoya Invitational Collegiate Golf Tournament. The event was held at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, and it offered the 16 participants a wonderful opportunity to reunite, as well as meet the current team. In a mini 2-man Better Ball tournament, alumnus Kevin Herlihy, C'72 teamed up with John Bermel, B?83 to take first place. Following the round, all of the alumni met in the lounge at the resort to catch up on old times.
Diamond Club Awards Banquet
The baseball team held its annual banquet on Saturday, October 18th in the Leavey Center. With nearly 100 friends and family present, the team celebrated the 2003 season. During the afternoon, the Hoyas competed in their annual Blue-Gray intrasquad series
Head of the Charles Luncheon, Boston
On Saturday, October 18, over 50 Hoyas gathered at the second annual Head of the Charles Luncheon on the banks of the Charles River. A special thank you to Cam Peters (F?81) for arranging the logistics for the second year in a row and to the event's sponsors, who sponsored the 30 Georgetown rowers in attendance at the event.
Gridiron Club Reception - Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
Thanks to the Cooke family of Ithaca, NY for their sponsorship of the outstanding tailgate held outside Cornell?s Schoellkopf Field on Saturday October 18. The event drew a large number of Hoya fans who were treated to a sizable buffet, sampled various Georgetown souvenirs, and had a chance to meet Coach Benson and other Georgetown athletics officials. The tailgate, held on a picture-perfect Ithaca morning, was a great backdrop to a successful afternoon for the Blue and Gray. As one guest succinctly put it, ?This is really a lot of fun!?
Crease Club Weekend
On Friday evening, October 17, Men's Lacrosse Alumni gathered in front of McDonough Gym for a barbecue to kick-off the start of their Alumni Weekend. A special thank you to Pat McArdle for helping to organize the barbecue. On Saturday, October 18, nearly 40 members of the Men's Lacrosse family hit the links in the 7th annual Crease Club Golf Outing. The event was again held at Fairfax National Golf Course in Centreville, VA. The first-place foursome played an excellent round of golf, scoring 8-under par to take the title. Those golfers were: parents Brian Casey, Chip Wilson, and Bob Corno, along with current junior Andy Corno. Once again, all involved enjoyed excellent weather and a great time on the golf course. Thanks to all who were able to make it out to play in this event.
Midnight Madness
Georgetown's Men's and Women's Basketball teams set the 2003-2004 season in motion on Friday, October 17 at their annual Midnight Madness Celebration in McDonough Arena. Events included a faculty vs. student basketball game, student performances, contests put on by Hoya Blue, and a 3-point shooting battle between the men and the women. The evening was highlighted by the introduction of the 2003-2004 men's and women's basketball teams and the countdown till midnight, when the season officially began.
Men's Lacrosse Awards Banquet
On Sunday, October 12, the Crease Club hosted the 2003 Men's Lacrosse Awards Banquet at Maggiano's in Tyson's Corner, VA. Nearly 150 family & friends gathered to honor the 2003 team and relive the highlights from last season. The freshman class for 2003-04 was introduced, and the student-athletes who graduated in 2003 were recognized for their 4 years of contributions to the program. After the meal and awards, all in attendance enjoyed a viewing of the 2003 highlight film.
Hoyas Unlimited Golf Outing, Renditions Golf Course
On Friday, October 10, 2003, Hoyas Unlimited hosted the 2nd Annual Homecoming Golf Outing. Fifty alumni, parents, and friends of Georgetown Athletics took on the tough course at Renditions Golf Club in Davidsonville, Maryland. Congratulations to Anthony Gentlesk, Patrick Machir, James Flynn and John McBride, all class of 1999 alumni, who won the tournament with a 10-under par round of 62. Mike Kavanaugh's shot on the 7th hole and Tom Doherty's 13th hole shot won the closest-to-the-pin contests. Georgetown head baseball coach Pete Wilk's fifth hole drive and John McBride's (B'99) fifteenth hole drive won the Longest Drive contest. Thank you to all who participated and we hope to see you again next year!
H2OYAS Homecoming Event
H2OYAS held its first annual Homecoming Happy Hour on Friday, October 10 at J. Paul's. Thirty-five alumni turned out for the event including Head Coach Bethany Bower. The club is hoping to expand this event into a quarterly Happy Hour for local alumni.
Hat-Trick Club Postgame Reception
On October 5, the Hat-Trick Club held a postgame tailgate on the McDonough Esplanade. Thank you to all the alumnae and friends and family of the women's soccer program who came out to support the team. The women's soccer alumnae also gathered on Sunday, October 12 for their second annual Homecoming Brunch at the Peacock Cafe
GRA 'Meet the Coaches' Luncheon
On Saturday, October 4, the Georgetown Rowing Association gathered for the first annual 'Meet the Coaches' luncheon. Forty alumni, friends, and family of Georgetown Crew gathered in the University's new O'Donovan Dining Hall to get to know the coaching staff. The attendees got to meet some of the current rowers and coaches, while also seeing the campus' newest buildings.
Side-Out Club Pot-Luck Dinner
Following the Hoyas' BIG EAST win over West Virginia on Saturday, October 4, the Side-Out Club held a pot-luck barbeque in McDonough Gym's Trophy Lobby. Many alumnae and friends and family were there to help the volleyball team celebrate its victory. Thank you to all of the parents who participated in the potluck.
Diamond Club Fall Potluck Picnic
On Saturday, September 27, 2004, the Diamond Club held a Potluck Picnic in front of McDonough Gymnasium, following the baseball team's intrasquad scrimmage, at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA. Many parents and alumni turned out for the event.
Atheltic Recognition Dinner
On Saturday, October 4, 2003, Hoyas Unlimited hosted the 17th Annual Athletic Recognition Dinner in the Leavey Center Ballroom on the campus of Georgetown University. Over 220 alumni, parents, students, friends, and staff of Georgetown attended the event.
Once again, Joe Lonardo (C'69) served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event, and as always did a great job. Georgetown University President Jack DeGioia (C'75) addressed the crowd to open the evening's program.
Andrew Pradella (F'71) was honored with the J. Gregory Carroll Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Hoyas Unlimited for his work with the 19th Hole Club. Head Track & Field coach Ron Helmer received the award for Outstanding Coaching Achievement for the second time in his career after leading the women's cross country team to its 15th consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Former Track & Field standout, Jamillah Bowman (B'03) joined the elite club of Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athletes, after a stellar career as an All-American 400m hurdler and an honor roll student. This year's Outstanding Contribution to Athletics Award went to the Georgetown Jesuit Community for their continuous support of Georgetown Athletics. Rev. McDermott (C'58) accepted the award, while Rev. McFadden spoke on behalf of the Jesuit Community. Each Jesuit was presented with a varsity letter from the Athletic Department.
Hoyas Unlimited President Jack McDonald (F'88, L'93) and the Director of Hoyas Unlimited Dan Cohen (C'98) presented Athletic Director Joe Lang with a check for $1.9 million dollars after a record-breaking year of fundraising. The Hoya Crosse Club received two incentive-based grants of $1,000 each for having the highest percentage increase in donors and the highest increase in dollars last year. The Hat-Trick Club was also awarded a $1,000 reward for being the club with the highest percentage of alumni percentage.

Sixth Annual Gridiron Club Kick-Off Reception
On Saturday, September 6, 2003, following the Hoyas exciting game versus Patriot League Rival Colgate, the Gridiron Club hosted the Sixth Annual Kick-Off Reception, sponsored by David Goracy, C'71. Among those asked to address the crowd of over 200 alumni, friends, and family was Senior Associate Director of Athletics Denis Kanach, David Goracy, Co-chairs of the Football Campaign Committee Bob Hussey B'71 and Bruce Simmons, B'69 and Head Coach Bob Benson. Coach Benson told group how proud he was of his team for their effort on the field and off, how honored he is to be a member of the Georgetown Athletics community and asked for their assistance in helping to build the University's new Multi-Sport Facility.
Also, present for the Kick-Off Reception were many of the former Hoya football captains. The captains gathered for their annual meeting prior to the game and enjoyed breakfast with Coach Benson. Those in attendance were honored on the field during halftime of the game.
Basketball Alumni Gather for Receptions and Parade
Over 65 men's basketball alumni ranging from the classes of 1942-2001 attended a reception and Evening Parade hosted by General James Jones (F'66), Commandant of the Marine Corps, on Friday evening, July 26, 2003 in Washington, DC at the Marine Barracks. The Hoya Hoop Club hosted a brunch and tour of McDonough Gym the following morning for alumni in town.
