Georgetown University Athletics

Big East Conference Hoya Saxa

General

Thursday Morning Musings

March 16, 2006

A week on the road in Manhattan (BIG EAST hoops), Syracuse (lacrosse), and Jupiter, Florida (men's golf) has provided enough fodder to fill several weeks of blog entries, so I will forego next weekend in Dayton and catch the Hoyas on the tube. Still, I would be remiss if I didn't offer kudos to the Hoyas and athletic staff who worked tirelessly throughout the past several weeks to make lemonade out of the lemons that was the limited supply of tickets at the BIG EAST. And they'll have no respite, no matter how the Hoyas fare this weekend, because Georgetown is the host school of the NCAA east regionals held at the Horizon (formerly MCI) Center. I can happily say that not a soul is wishing for a lighter schedule in the coming weeks.

Head coach Kevin Kelly speaks to football alums and friends at NYC welcome reception organized by former player Rico Mariani '96

Assistant head coach Rob Sgarlata '94 with Matt Mattimore '99 and Skender Derti '99

To steal and then recast an old line, "I went to the BIG EAST tournament and a football reception broke out." In what has become an annual rite of late winter, football alums and families gathered in the Big Apple last week to hear from new head football coach Kevin Kelly. Coach 2K briefed the attendees on the new staff, upcoming spring workouts, and goals for the program next season and beyond. And of course, he asked for continued support from the team's former players. Surely, the most appropriate question/response from any former athlete has to be: "If not us, then whom?

More than 50 attendees came to gather with teammates and to hear Coach Kelly

My picks for most interesting contests this week:

> Men's Basketball: Nothing like an NCAA bid to make you forget the Big East tourney real fast. In the first NCAA postseason game since 2001, the #7-seeded Hoyas (21-9) face #10-seeded University of Northern Iowa (23-9) on Friday at 2:45 pm in Dayton, Ohio. For lots of links to Hoya postseason info, check out hoyasaxa.com here.

> Crew: It's finally here! The opening of the spring rowing season. All the Hoya squads will assemble this Saturday on the banks of the Cooper River in Camden, NJ to compete in the sixth annual Jesuit Invitational. Take a break from the hoop action and come out and watch the Hoya rowers in action.

> Women's Lacrosse: On Saturday, the #9-ranked Hoyas (4-0) travel to Durham to play #2-ranked Duke (6-0) at noon at Koskinen Stadium. In a match of unbeatens, the Hoyas will take the field with two days rest after defeating William & Mary 13-3 at home on Wednesday.

> Men's Lacrosse: The #8-ranked Hoyas (3-1), fresh off victories over Syracuse and Delaware, will host former Hoya assistant Matt Kerwick and the 17th-ranked Hobart Statesmen (3-1) on Saturday at 1 pm at the Hoya Yard. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop in 1990, head coach Dave Urick won ten straight D-III championships as mentor of the upstate NY lacrosse powerhouse.

Last week, the Hoya athletic teams posted an overall win-loss record of 5-11 and earned a 1st, a 2nd, an 8th, and an 11th place finishes in standings competition. The men's indoor DMR squad took 4th place at the NCAA Championships.
