March 27, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team turned in a fourth-place finish at the 2006 Highlander Softball Classic in Radford, Va. They wrapped up the weekend tournament by dropping a pair of games to Longwood and Howard on Sunday, March 26. The overall tournament championship was won by the host team, Radford University.

In the opener, the Hoyas ran into a tough offensive squad in Longwood University. The Lancers handed the Hoyas a 26-0 defeat, powered by a nine-run first inning that provided a rough start to the day's doubleheader for sophomore pitcher Anna Wheatley (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles). Wheatley pitched two-and-one-third innings, allowing 13 runs on 13 hits before being relieved by freshman Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall).

Offensively, the Hoyas recorded five hits, including back-to-back singles from sophomores Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) in the fourth inning. Also recording singles were freshman Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) and sophomores Amanda Chase (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) and Wheatley.

In the second half of the twinbill, the Hoyas (1-13) suffered an 11-3 loss to the Howard Bison. Clark struggled early in the circle as the Bison tallied six runs off eight hits in her three innings of play. Wheatley pitched two-and-two-thirds innings of relief, allowing five runs off six hits.

The Georgetown bats awoke in the third inning against the Bison as the Hoyas tallied all three runs in that frame. Junior catcher and All-Tournament Team selection Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) doubled to left field, allowing centerfielder Lang to score. The double continued Richter's outstanding offensive output against Howard in the tournament as she finished the weekend with four hits, two runs, and one RBI against the Bison. Sophomore Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) added two RBI on the day for the Hoyas.

The Georgetown softball team next takes the field on Tuesday, April 4 for a doubleheader against the Retrievers of UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
