Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team earned a bid to the 2006 BIG EAST Championship, it was announced Monday by the BIG EAST office in Providence, R.I. The tournament will be held at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Fla. The Hoyas ended the regular season 6-10 overall, 2-3 in league play.
The Hoyas received an eighth seed, pitting them against top-seeded Notre Dame on Friday, April 21. Doubles is slated for noon with singles immediately following.
The Irish have won the BIG EAST Championship the two previous years and have competed in the finals every year since joining the league in 1995. Notre Dame has not lost a BIG EAST match up since 2004 when the suffered a 4-3 loss at Virginia Tech during the regular season, only to avenge the loss in the 2004 BIG EAST Championship finals.
The Hoyas will look to its top performers to light a spark against Notre Dame in the tournament first round. Senior Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep) has won his last three singles matches including a win over Marquette at the third singles position. In all three matches, he came back after losing the first set.
Junior Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) carries the only winning record (8-7) on the team, seven of them coming from the fourth singles position. Killeavy has only lost to one BIG EAST opponent with a straight-set loss at Rutgers.
Junior Bert Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) has a 7-8 record playing a range of positions between second and sixth singles. Baggio had a six match win streak in the middle of the season, including wins over Connecticut, Villanova and Rutgers.
In doubles action, sophomore Andrew Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall - St. Mark's) and freshman Kenneth Wong (Repulse Bay, Hong Kong/St, Mark's [N.H.]) captured eight wins, including a six match win streak in the middle of the season.
The doubles duo of sophomores Theodore Tywang (Nasvhille, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) won seven matches this season, three against BIG EAST opponents Connecticut, Villanova and Rutgers.
The winner between GU/ND will play the winner of St. John's vs. USF on Saturday, April 22 at noon. The loser will feed into the consolation bracket and play on Saturday at 9 a.m.
