April 19, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team shut out local opponent George Mason, 3-0, in the first half of a twinbill today at George Mason Field. The Hoyas dropped the second game, 5-0, and are now 2-20 on the season.

The first game saw rock-solid defense from both teams through the sixth inning as the game remained scoreless.

In the seventh inning, junior catcher Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) laced a single to left center field to start the inning. Sophomore Anna McCann (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Bishop England) pinch ran for Richter as sophomore Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) hit a single to centerfield. Senior Stephanie Sartori (Indiatlantic, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) stepped in to pinch run for Calabrese. Sophomore Erin Doherty (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing McCann to third and Sartori to second.

With the bases loaded, freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled to centerfield for McCann to score the first run of the game. Sartori scored on a groundout from sophomore Amanda Chase (Claremont, N.J./Stevens). A single from freshman Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) allowed pinch-runner Anna Wheatley (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles) to cross the plate, scoring the third and final run in the 3-0 victory.

Clark pitched seven innings surrendering just three hits and earned the first shutout of her GU career.

The second half of the doubleheader saw five hits off Hoya bats. In the first inning, sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct.,N.J./The Lawrenceville School) tallied a single and a stolen base. Richter also notched a single but both runners would be stranded.

Doherty, Wheatley and freshman Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) would also tally singles on the day in the 5-0 loss to the Patriots.

Wheatley pitched six innings, allowing five runs off nine hits.

"I thought the girls played their best ball of the season today," said Head Coach Pat Conlan. "The 3-0 win was an exciting game to be a part of. We played excellent defense, received an incredible pitching performance from Courtney and got timely hits when we needed them. It was a true team effort.

"Even in our loss, I thought we played well. The team had tremendous energy and confidence today. Hopefully they will be able to carry that over into the last six games of the year."

The Hoyas return to the diamond on Saturday, April 22 when they play cross-town opponent Howard in a doubleheader at Banneker Stadium. The first game is slated for 1 p.m.
