Men's Tennis Loses a Pair of Weekend Matches

April 3, 2006

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team lost a pair of matches last weekend. On Saturday, April 1 the Hoyas faced the Spiders of Richmond and lost a close match, 4-3. On Sunday, April 2 GU lost to Longwood University, 5-2, dropping to 4-9 this season.

Freshman Kenneth Wong (Repulse Bay, Hong Kong/St. Paul's [N.H.]) won three matches this weekend as he was undefeated in doubles with sophomore Andrew Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall - St. Mark's) defeating Richmond, 9-7, and Longwood, 8-0, in the third doubles flight. Wong notched a win at the sixth singles position with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Longwood.

Against Richmond the Hoyas took the doubles point when Wong and Clayton won the third flight and senior Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep) and freshman Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) edged Richmond at the first doubles flight, 9-8(4).

With the 1-0 lead, sophomore Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) won convcingly at the first singles position, 6-3, 6-0. A win from junior Bert Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) at the fifth singles position would put the Hoyas one point away from victory. Richmond took a three-set battle at the fourth singles position to stifle the chance of a Hoya victory.

On Sunday against Longwood, sophomore Theodore Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) notched a decisive win at the third singles position, 6-3, 6-0. Tywang's win paired with Wong's win at six, were the only points in Longwood's 5-2 win over Georgetown.

The Hoyas return to the court on Tuesday, April 4 when they host the Howard Bison at the McDonough Tennis Complex at 3 p.m.
