Softball Loses Doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's

April 5, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team lost a doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's today in its inaugural season. The first game was an 8-0 shutout for the Mount and the second game ended with a 10-4 Hoya loss. Sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) recorded three hits on the day.

The first game saw very little action from the Hoya offense. A single to right field in the fourth inning from Lang would be the lone hit of the game for the Hoyas.

The GU defense held off Mount St. Mary's in the first two innings, allowing merely one run. However, the Mount offense broke open the game, scoring six runs off six hits en route to the 8-0 victory.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) went the distance and allowed eight runs off 11 hits.

The Hoya offense came alive in the second game of the twinbill. Georgetown got off to a quick start scoring two runs in the first inning. A triple from Lang and a double to center field from sophomore Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) would start the inning off. Calabrese recorded one RBI with the double as Lang scored. Junior catcher Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) reached first on an error from the second baseman and sophomore Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) was walked to load the bases. Clark hit a sacrifice fly to center field for Calabrese to score the second run of the inning.

Trailing 5-2 in the fourth, the GU offense struck again. Sophomore Erin Doherty (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) was walked and then stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Freshman Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) doubled in Doherty, recording one RBI. A single from freshman Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) brought home Gallinari for the second run of the inning. The Hoyas still trailed, 5-4.

Mount St. Mary's went on to score three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning for a 10-4 victory.

Clark pitched six innings, allowing 10 runs off 14 hits.

The Hoyas (1-19) continue the season on Wednesday, April 19 when they travel to George Mason for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
