Big East Conference Hoya Saxa

General

Thursday Musings

May 11, 2006

Senior student-athletes came one step closer to graduation last week when HOYAS Unlimited held its annual send-off dinner for the soon-to-be Hoya alums in the lobby of McDonough Memorial Gymnasium. In exchange for their departing email address, seniors picked up a complimentary Hoyas T-shirt, were treated to an Outback-catered steak and chicken dinner, and listened to words of congrats and farewell from AD Bernard Muir.

Hoya Saxa, class of 2006!

If you have spent any time driving in and around Washington, DC in the springtime, you have probably looked out your car window and seen Randy, the man on the bike. I don't know his last name, but I like this guy and I am determined in due course to find out more about him. What I do know is that if there is a lacrosse game going on anywhere in the metro area, then Randy is not far away. I see him regularly biking to and from college games, high school games, inside the beltway, outside the beltway, on side streets, on highways, just about everywhere. Often,

Randy, the ubiquitous biker and DC sports fan icon, makes his rounds in Georgetown

he is carrying plastic bags of groceries on his handlebars. Most people are like me. They know of him but know nothing about him.

If there is one thing I could guess about him though: he cares not one whit about the rising price of gasoline.

My picks for most interesting contests this week:

> Men's Lacrosse: In first round NCAA tournament action, the #8-seeded Hoyas (11-2) host unseeded Navy (11-3) on Sunday at 3:30 pm at the Hoya Yard. The Blue & Gray laxmen defeated the Midshipmen earlier this season 9-5. If the weather is decent, a home sellout is expected. The game will be televised by CSTV and also can be viewed FREE on the internet through this link.

> Baseball: It's crunch time for the men on the diamond. The Hoyas (23-27) play a three-game series this weekend at Shirley Povich field in Bethesda, MD against BIG EAST rival Rutgers (24-22-1). This homestand will go a long way to determining if Georgetown makes the eight-team conference play-offs. The series opens with single contests on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm and concludes with a 1 pm game on Sunday. The Hoya nine are currently tied with South Florida for the final spot in the conference tournament.

> Women's Lacrosse: The second season begins next Saturday when the #3-seeded Hoyas (13-3) face the #14-seeded Monmouth Hawks (13-6) at 1:00 pm in West Long Branch, NJ in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Big East champion Hoyas were denied the opportunity to host the game due to minor administrative irregularities in previous years.

> Women's Crew: Perhaps the marquee regatta of the year for the Hoya women, Georgetown will enter heavyweight and lightweight boats at the Eastern Sprints next Sunday in Camden, NJ. Come out and celebrate 30 years of women's rowing on the Hilltop by cheering on the Blue & Gray crews.

> Track & Field: Eastern supremacy in outdoor track and field is up for grabs this week as the Hoya men and women thinclads head to the IC4A and ECAC Championships from Friday through Sunday in Princeton, NJ.

Last week, the Hoya athletic teams posted an overall win-loss record of 5-2 and earned one 1st, three 2nd, four 4th, one 5th, and two 6th place individual finishes in the BIG EAST outdoor track and field championships and two 2nd and two 4th place finishes in women's crew.
