Georgetown Swimming & Diving Program Earns Academic Honors

July 13, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown University's swimming and diving teams have been recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as two of the top All-Academic Teams in the nation for the spring semester of 2006. The women's team tied for first place, along with Manhattan College, while the men nabbed the third spot among Division I institutions.

The GU women compiled an impressive 3.61 grade point average (GPA), while the men combined for a team GPA of 3.36. One-hundred and nine schools Division I schools comprised the women's side, with 80 representing the men's field.

This marks the 24th consecutive semester that the Georgetown swimming and diving program has received CSCAA Academic All-America accolades since head coach Bethany Bower came to the Hilltop 12 years ago. Both teams have received the distinction in each semester under Bower's direction.

In order to qualify for the CSCAA All-Academic honor, the grade-point average of the entire swimming and diving team, including all student-athletes on the eligibility list, must average at least a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Those GPA's that are 3.25 or better receive a "superior" rating. A GPA of 3.00 or better receives an "excellent" rating and a 2.80 or better GPA receives a "commendable" rating. Both the men's and women's teams received a "superior" rating.
