Washington, D.C. - Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1 in overtime to the visiting Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday at North Kehoe Field. Georgetown falls to 3-7-0 overall and missed a chance to pull even in BIG EAST Conference play, falling to 2-4.
The game headed to overtime after a wide-open 90 minutes saw both teams find the back of the net.
Midway through the first session of extra time, Seton Hall's Teddy Niziolek took a pass from John Raus and was able to hit a one-timer past Georgetown goalkeeper Joe Devine (Exton, Pa./The Haverford School) from 12 yards that ended the contest. It was Niziolek's first game-winner of the season.
Georgetown open the scoring in the 56th minute when sophomore Alex Pangraze (Greenville, S.C./Greenville) was able to capitalize off a corner kick taken by fellow sophomore Corey Zeller (Toms River, N.J./Toms River). Pangraze's first collegiate goal gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
After both teams had quality scoring chances on counter-attacks particularly in the second half, Seton Hall (7-3-0, 5-1-0 BE) was able to answer in the 80th minute, when Raus beat Devine to the near post after creating some space away from a defender from 15 yards out.
Nine minutes into the first half, Seton Hall had two golden opportunities. Raus crossed a ball from the right wing into the top of the six-yard box with Devine off his line where SHU's Yomar Gonzalez blasted a shot that was blocked by Georgetown defender Mark Zeman (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Twp.). Immediately after the Gonzalez shot, Eliiseo Giusfredi hit a shot of the rebound that was saved by Devine who scrambled back into position.
"We executed near the goal pretty well today," said GU head coach Brian Wiese. "We created so many good opportunities to go ahead 2-0, we had a Daniel Grasso shot hit the post but it just didn't happen. We certainly could have won but we let it slip through our fingers."
Georgetown senior Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) had a breakaway with 11:45 left in regulation only to be stopped by a beautiful save from Paul McHenry.
Devine made five saves while his counterpart, McHenry stopped four Hoya shots. GU outshot the Pirates, 18-15.
Seton Hall has now won four of the last five meetings between the schools.
Georgetown travels to Providence College on Saturday, September 30 for a 1 p.m. BIG EAST tilt.
