Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving program split a meet against American yesterday at McCarthy Pool as they celebrated its Senior Meet. The Hoya women took a 119-118 decision over AU while the GU men lost, 120-110, to the Eagles. The women improve to 2-7 on the year while the men slip to 0-9.
On the men's side, the performances were even among the squad with freshman Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif./Damien) taking three first -place finishes. He won the 400 yard individual medley in a time of 4:17.32 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.22. Koh then teamed up with sophomores Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) and David Ballinger (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) as well as fellow-freshman Eric Mooney (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) to take first in the 200 medley relay. Mooney would go on to take a top finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.77 while Bistric found second-place honors in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore co-captain Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) had two strong performances as he took first in the 500 freestyle and second in the 400 individual medley. Sophomore diver Michael McWilliams (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga High) won both the one and three-meter diving events. Freshmen James LiVolsi (Scotch Plains, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) round out the top performances on the men's side taking first in the 1000 freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke, respectively.
The women posted strong performances in the relays, taking the top-two spots in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of sophomore Katelyn O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and freshmen Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy), Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), and Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:52.41. Vickroy and Alito were also a part of the freestyle medley first-place team that also included freshman Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) and junior Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary). Stark took home and additional first-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a second place finish in the 200 freestyle. Alito also took home additional first-place honors in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.68. Freshman diver Maija Paegle (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) finished first in the one-meter diving event and second in the three meter. Junior Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) had two second-place finishes, swimming the 50 freestyle in 25.88 and the 100 freestyle in 55.46. Senior Laura Sytnyk, in the final home meet of her four-year career at Georgetown, swam to a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:46.22.
The GU women return to the water on Saturday, January 27 when the travel to Drexel for a meet at 2 p.m. The entire squad will then swim a meet at George Mason on Saturday, February 2. The meet time has yet to be determined.
