Brendan Cannon, Jerry Lambe Earn ECAC Lacrosse Preseason Honors

Jan. 22, 2007

Washington, D.C. - After being selected to win the 2007 ECAC Lacrosse League title, the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team had three players selected to sweep the league's top preseason awards.

Junior Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) has been named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while junior teammate Jerry Lambe (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) has been tabbed the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Hoya freshman Chris Nixon (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) has been chosen as the league's Preseason Rookie of the Year.

The Hoyas, who won the 2006 ECAC title and have won five of the last seven league championships, were picked to win the 2007 title in a vote of the conference coaches last month. Georgetown received five first-place votes and 46 total points, edging out Massachusetts, which received one first-place vote and 41 points overall. Loyola was picked third, followed by Penn State, Fairfield, Rutgers, Hobart and St. John's.

Cannon led the Hoyas in scoring last year with 46 points and was among the nation's leaders in assists with 32. Cannon was fourth in the country in assists per game (2.29) and 18th in points per game (3.29). He had 13 multi-point games last season and 11 with at least two assists as he recorded the 16th-best single-season total in school history. Cannon's 32 assists last season were tied for the second-best mark in a single season at Georgetown with Andy Flick (2000). In two years on the Hilltop, Cannon has played in 27 games and scored 69 points, notching 29 goals and 40 assists.

Lambe was one of five Georgetown players to earn All-American honors last year. He started all 14 last year, had 25 ground balls and helped the Georgetown defense rank 12th in the country in scoring defense, yielding only 8.43 goals per game.

Nixon, a 6-0, 190-pound defender, helped lead his high school team to three-straight state championships and was named an All-American during his final two years as a scholastic.

Cannon and Lambe were tabbed as preseason Second Team All-American selections by Face-Off Yearbook and the Hoyas are ranked No. 5 nationally by Inside Lacrosse.

The Hoyas finished the 2006 season with a 12-3 overall record, won the ECAC title for the fifth time in the last seven years and were ranked No. 5 in the country in the final polls by Inside Lacrosse and STX/USILA. The Hoyas reached the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine years.

Georgetown opens the 2007 season on Saturday, February 24 when the team plays at Maryland. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. in College Park, Maryland.
