Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's basketball team returns home to Verizon Center on Wednesday night for a BIG EAST Conference game with DePaul. Tip-off at Verizon Center is slated for 7:30 p.m. on January 24. The game will be shown live on ESPN2, with Dave Pasch and Rick Majerus calling the action. It can be heard locally with Rich Chvotkin on SportsTalk 980 AM.
The Hoyas enter Wednesday night's game with a two-game win streak, improving 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST after road wins last week over Rutgers (68-54) and Seton Hall (74-58). Georgetown is 8-3 at home this season, including a 6-1 mark at Verizon Center. In the last two years, the Hoyas have posted a 15-3 record in the building.
Freshman forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after his performance during the last week, when he averaged 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and connected on 68.8 percent of his shots from the field (11-of-16). Summers scored a game-high 17 points in the win at Rutgers and followed that up with his first career double-double - 17 points and 10 rebounds - in the win at Seton Hall.
The Hoyas have three players averaging at least 11 points per game, led by junior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep), who is scoring 11.8 points per game. Hibbert is second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and is leading the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, connecting on 70.9 percent of his shots from the field (83-of-117). Junior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman), who scored a career-high 21 points in the win at Seton Hall, is averaging 11.3 points per game and has hit a team-high 34 three-pointers. Junior forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) is third on the team with 11.2 points per game, and leads the team with 6.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Sophomore guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy) is averaging 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Georgetown has been led by a defense that ranks No. 5 nationally in scoring defense, allowing only 55.8 points per game. The Hoyas have held 14 opponents to 60 points or fewer this season. On the offensive side, Georgetown has been sharp, leading the BIG EAST and ranking second nationally in field goal percentage at 52.2 percent (447-of-857).
DePaul enters Wednesday night's game with a 12-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the BIG EAST. The Blue Demons have split their last four games, with losses to Pittsburgh and Louisville sandwiched around wins over Rutgers and St. John's. Sophomore forward Wilson Chandler leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game and is second on the team with 6.7 rebounds. Senior guard Sammy Mejia is second on the team with 14.4 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with 6.9 per game.
This will be the 21st meeting between Georgetown and DePaul. The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 14-6, and have won the last five meetings. The Hoyas are 7-2 at home against the Blue Demons.
