Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's swimming and diving team lost a 157-139 decision to Drexel today at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center. The women fall to 2-8 overall, with a 0-3 mark in BIG EAST Conference action.
The 400 freestyle relay was the 14th event of the meet and GU fell just shy of a first-place finish with a time of 3:41.19, less than one second off the time of the first-place Dragon quartet. With Drexel gathering first-place points in the 400 freestyle relay and GU failing to finish in the top-two spots in the last two events, the Dragons came away with the win.
The Hoyas got off to a strong start with a first-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The quartet of sophomore Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary), and freshmen Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary), Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) took the event with a time of 1:52.77, nearly four seconds faster than the second-place Drexel squad. The Dragons pulled ahead taking the top spot in the next two events, but the 100 backstroke would prove to be a strong event for the Hoyas as Alito, Vickroy and Maffey took the top-three spots, respectively.
Vickroy went on to take another first-place finish in the 100 freestyle, recording a time of 55.96. In the 200 backstroke, freshman Margaret Kimball (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) swam to first place with a time of 2:14.00, as Maffey and freshman Suzanne Waller (Darien, Conn./Darien) followed close behind in second and third, respectively.
Senior Laura Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) rounded out the top finishers with a time of 1:02.49 in the 100 butterfly. Sytnyk also took a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly and 1000 freestyle.
The Hoyas return to the water on Friday, February 2 when both the men's and women's squads travel to the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va. for a meet at George Mason. The meet is slated for 5 p.m.
