Sailing to Seattle

October 5, 2007

I love to write about the Georgetown sailing team. Theirs is a 70-year story of perseverance and faith that I hope to expound upon more in the near future. Of course, I go back to earlier hardship days when the team sailed above (or is it below?) the sonar. They get noticed a little more now but not nearly ever enough. Today, I want to expose a bit of the future.

Having helped all-everything Andrew Campbell '06 to bring national team of the year honors to the Hilltop two season ago as sophomores, seniors Chris Behm, a two-time All-America selection and Blaire Herron, a three-time AA, will need some help to reclaim the trophy this year.

Head Coach Mike Callahan was honored in 2006 as GU's coach of the year

The upperclassmen just may get it. It looks like head coach Mike Callahan '97 and assistant Alana O'Reilly did an outstanding job in replacing some of the graduation losses of the past two years. On the 28-person roster hailing from 11 states and 2 U.S. territories, keep your eye on Evan Aras of Annapolis, Scott Furnary of Rye, NY, and Michael Campbell of San Diego (yes, he is Andrew's younger brother). But most of all, you better watch out for Charlie Buckingham of Newport Beach.

Last weekend in Annapolis, Charlie captured the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association's (MAISA) single-handed championship, aka, the Carl Van Duyne Trophy. He now advances to the 2007 ICSA Single-Handed National Championship on November 3-4 at the Seattle Yacht Club.

Andrew Campbell won this title three times during his collegiate career. What say we draft Andrew, schedule permitting over the next month, to help coach the future.

Charlie's championship race in the great northwest in November will be the furthest distance any Hoya will travel to compete this year. The last time we competed for a national title in Seattle was 1984. And we know what happened then.

Happy days are here again.
