Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University swimming and diving program opens the 2007-08 season at the Potomac Relays today, October 5, at American University. The event starts at 4 p.m. at the Reeves Aquatic Center on American's campus.
The program loses four and returns 29 letterwinners from last year's squad. For his first recruiting class, Head Coach Steven Cartwright added 15 student-athletes to the swimming and diving roster. The men's team loses just one letterwinner from last year's squad while returning 11 and adding nine newcomers to the mix. The women lost three student-athletes but returns 18 letterwinners and six freshmen join the team.
Cartwright also named the captains for the 2007-08 season. For the men, juniors Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) and Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh) were selected while seniors Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) and Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) will captain the women.
During the 2006-07 campaign, 14 school records were broken including 13 at the BIG EAST Conference Championship - an event that 24 student-athletes qualified for. The team finished with four top-16 finishes at the league championship and both the men's and the women's teams were tabbed CSCAA (College Swim Coaches Association of America) Academic All-American teams. The men finished the year with the highest grade point average of any NCAA Division I institution.
