A Soulful Day

November 2, 2007

Today is All Soul's Day. It commemorates the souls of the faithful departed. It follows the Feast of All Saints on November 1. Because many of the saintly people I have known in my life are priests and because a number of them have gone to the next life, I went to remember and pray for them at a special place on the Georgetown campus: the Jesuit cemetery.

The campus has grown up around the cemetery so that it is now an oasis of calm surrounded by bustling undergraduate activity. Hundreds of headstones mark the graves of the more than 200-year old Georgetown contingent of Ignatius' company of men. As I stood and visited several of the grave sites, I was humbled by both the familiar and eminent as well as the unfamiliar. These souls shared a powerful bond and a lasting commitment during their lives and their time at the University. They all spent their adult lives generously in service to others and to Georgetown.

Requiescant in pace.
