Softball Opens 2007 Season at Kennesaw State Invitational

Feb. 16, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team opens the 2007 season this weekend at the Kennesaw State Invitational in Kennesaw, Ga. The tournament features four other schools; Evansville, Georgia Tech, Miami (Ohio) and the host school, Kennesaw State University. It is a round-robin format with the Hoyas playing two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday at the Bobby Bailey Complex on KSU's campus.

There will be a live telecast of all the games at the Kennesaw State Invitational available at http://www.video4ever.net/test/

The Hoyas, under second-year head coach Pat Conlan, posted a 4-23 record last year in the inaugural season of softball on the Hilltop. The Hoyas return eight letterwinners from last year's squad and adds eight newcomers.

One of the top returnees is senior Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) who led the team with a .338 batting average with 22 hits and 13 runs batted in.

Junior Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) started every game for the Blue and Gray in 2006 and held a .301 batting average with 22 hits while leading the team with 15 stolen bases.

Sophomore Katharine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) held a .260 batting average with 19 hits and four runs batted in during the 2006 campaign and recorded the first hit in program history on the program's first at bat. Incantalupo also scored the first run in program history in the 16-3 loss to Albany last season. Junior Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) was second on the team in runs (9) and led the team in doubles (4). Of all returning players, Sonnichsen had the most putouts during the 2006 season.

Junior Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) ranked second on the team with seven runs batted in and had a .341 on-base percentage while also maintaining the highest fielding percentage from returning players. Sophomore Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) ranked third on the squad with a .333 slugging percentage.

The incoming freshman class will be relied upon heavily this season especially in the pitching rotation as the entire staff will be comprised of freshman. Additionally, the infield will depend heavily on the fielding skills of the talented incoming class.

Georgetown faces Kennesaw State on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. The Hoyas will then play Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. On Sunday, Georgetown plays Evansville at 10 a.m. and then Miami (Ohio) at noon.
