Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team lost a4-3 match to Hampton today at the McDonough Tennis Complex. After dropping the doubles point, Hampton won four-straight singles matches to clinch the victory. Junior Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and sophomore Adam Gross (Quogue, N.Y./Westhampton) pulled double-duty today as they both won their doubles and singles matches.
The Hoyas started strong, winning two of three matches to clinch the doubles point. At the third position, junior co-captain Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Tywang won a decisive 8-2 decision, however, a loss at the top spot would leave the doubles point up for grabs at the second slot. Freshman Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) and Gross won, 8-4, to clinch the point and give the Hoyas the edge.
With the match decided at 4-1, Tywang went on to easily topple his opponent, allowing Hampton's Andre Nogueira just one game in the match.
Gross fought back from a set down and forced the match to a third-set super tiebreaker. An errant forehand gave Gross a pair of match points but a tough serve and forehand passing shot off the racket of Hampton's Sung-Kwon Baek pitted the tiebreaker at nine points apiece. Gross fired back-to-back passing shots, the first a forehand down the line and the second a backhand down the line, to win the match, 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
The Hoyas hit the road to make up a match at Old Dominion tomorrow, March 23. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Hoyas will return to the court on Sunday, March 25 when they host Rutgers at the McDonough Tennis Complex for their first conference competition. The match is slated for 11 a.m.
