Georgetown Sailing Posts Three Top-Five Finishes This Weekend

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University sailing team continued its strong start to the 2007 fall season with a top-five finish in all three of the weekend's events. The Hoyas placed second at the Nevins Trophy and had a pair of fifth-place showings at the New York Maritime Fall Open and the Mrs. Hurst Bowl.

At the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., Georgetown was second of 20 schools with 290 points in 45 races. St. Mary's took the crown with 248. Senior Chris Behm (Hampton, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and junior Carly Chamberlain (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) placed fourth in the A division with 111 points in their 15 races, including two wins and five top-three finishes. Senior Zach Kavanaugh (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) skippered the B division squad to 87 points and a second-place showing, sharing time with both sophomore Alexandra Taylor (Hobe Sound, Fla./The Benjamin School) and freshman Evan Aras (Annapolis, Md./Severn School). Kavanaugh led the boat to a win and eight top-five finishes in their 15 starts. In the C division, freshman Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) placed fifth with 92 points. Buckingham finished the weekend strong by placing in the top-five in five of his last six races, highlighted by three victories.

The Hoyas were fifth of 20 teams at the weather-shortened New York Maritime Fall Open with 86 points over 16 races. Hobart/William Smith took first place with 58 points. In the A division, senior Todd Breeden (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman Ashley Phillips (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) were fourth with 44 points in their eight races. Breeden and Phillips won the fourth start and also had three fourth-place finishes. The freshman duo of Michael Campbell (San Diego, Calif./Bishops School) and Ginger Cutler (New York, N.Y./Groton School) totaled 42 points, behind five top-four finishes, in the B division to place fifth.

The women's squad was in Dartmouth for the Mrs. Hurst Bowl, placing fifth of 18 schools with 155 points. Harvard took the 22 race event with 103 points. Senior Blaire Herron (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and junior Brooke Crawford (Worth Palm Beach, Fla./St. George's School) sailed in the A division, placing fourth with 79 points. In their 11 starts, the pair had six top-five finishes. In the B division, junior Emily Babbitt (Dartmouth, Mass./Bishop Stang) and senior Jamie Loeks (Rye, N.Y./Rye) was sixth with 76 points, including five top-five showings.

Georgetown returns to action next weekend with the North Fall 1, Laser South Qualifier, Jesuit Cup and Senators Cup South 1.
