Justine M. Metz B`88

October 2, 2004

Georgetown volleyball witnessed many transitions in the mid-1980's, such as the introduction of the year-end Big East championship tournament as well as several head coaching changes that were all part of the growth of the sport within the conference and the University. Through four of these seasons, a confident and talented young woman named Justine Metz helped to provide stability, leadership and success to her teams.

Justine came to Georgetown from Stamford Catholic where she was an All-State player who led her squad to the Connecticut Class-S Championship in her senior year.

Justine Metz was a natural leader on the court, and a major factor in all the accomplishments Georgetown volleyball enjoyed from 1984-87. With a strong vertical leap and quickness, Justine was dominant at the net. She holds three of the top four all-time season performances for solo blocks. She is the Hoyas' all-time leader in blocks with 254.

Justine rebounded from an injury that forced her to miss most of her freshman season to record a team-high 70 solo blocks as a sophomore. Her 288 kills in her first full season of collegiate volleyball was the second highest on the team. That year, she helped the team to their best record since 1982 (21-17) and was named to the Penn Invitational All-Tournament team. Justine and her teammates finished in third place at the Big East Tournament, losing to eventual champion and perennial nemesis, Providence.

In 1986, Justine again was an intimidating presence at the net. Entering the Big East tournament with a sub .500 record and seeded sixth, Justine led her team to a semifinal berth with a triumph over Villanova that avenged three regular season losses. This rallying finish to the season provided a valuable springboard for Justine's senior year.

During her senior season, Justine led her team to a second place finish at the BIG EAST Conference Championship. Her team won 14 of its last 17 matches, with Justine posting 331 kills and 179 digs for the year.

Playing for three coaches in four years, a healthy Justine helped to transform the Hoyas from a 7-27 team in 1984 to a 22-10 team in 1987. In both her junior and senior seasons, Justine recorded 92 blocks, still the Hoya record for most blocks in one season. Justine was named MVP in each of these final two years.

A marketing major in the School of Business, Justine maintained a 3.70 GPA and graduated with cum laude honors. In 1987, Justine was named Academic All-America for her outstanding performance in the classroom and on the court.

Since graduation, Justine has enjoyed a very successful career in business, directing market brand research for such major corporations as Unilever, Kraft Foods, General Electric, and Morgan Stanley. More recently, she headed up private banking marketing at Bank of America and just last August, Justine joined Fidelity Investments to lead a new segment.

Justine was featured in the Target Marketing magazine March 2003 cover story, "CRM Meets Wall Street" for her work at Morgan Stanley where she was the Executive Director for Strategic Solutions.

Justine lives in Providence, RI and commutes to work in Boston.
