Georgetown's Hibbert Named Mid-Season Naismith Candidate

Jan. 25, 2008

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University senior men's basketball player, Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) was named one of thirty college men's basketball players named as a Mid-Season Candidate for the Naismith Award.

The Naismith Trophy was named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the founder of the game of basketball. The trophy is presented annually to the male and female college basketball players of the year. The Atlanta Tipoff Club's board of selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators, vote on player performance to select the winner. During the week of Feb. 18-22, the board will vote again to narrow the list from thirty candidates to four in.

Hibbert was one of eight seniors selected to the list, and one of only four BIG EAST players to be chosen as a Mid-Season candidate. Hibbert leads the Hoyas in scoring with 13.2 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds per game. He is shooting 59% from the field and 61.2% from the free throw line. Hibbert has 12 games in double figures, three games with 20 or more points, and three double-doubles. Hibbert's first career three-point field goal helped the Hoyas defeat Connecticut, 72-69, in the last minute of the game on January 12.. In BIG EAST games, Hibbert is average 15.2 ppg and 7.5 rpg.

The ninth-ranked Georgetown University men's basketball team plays the first of two road BIG EAST match-ups on Saturday, visiting West Virginia. The Hoyas and Mountaineers will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The game can be heard locally on SportsTalk 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin calling the action, and can be seen on MASN, with Dave Pasch and Len Elmore providing the play-by-play and analysis.

Georgetown won its second-straight game on Monday, defeating Syracuse in overtime in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,035 at Verizon Center, 64-62, as Hibbert hit an open 13-footer with less than a minute left in overtime. The Hoyas, who are ranked No. 9 in both the Associated Press Top-25 poll and in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll, improved to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in league play with their overtime win.
