Morgantown, W.V - West Virginia's LaQuita Owens matched a season-high with 22 points and the Mountaineers shot 52 percent from the floor in a 67-35 win over visiting Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas fell to 11-8 on the season, 1-5 in BIG EAST action.
Georgetown's Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) scored 13 points off the bench. The Hoya backcourt of Brina Pollack (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) and sophomore Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) each handed out four assists.
West Virginia shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor in the first half and took a 40-20 lead at the break.
At the 14:20 mark in the first half, Georgetown took its first lead, 12-11. Hoya senior center Aminata Diop (Saint Louis, Senegal) hit an elbow jumper, her third bucket of the half, but WVU field goals from Ashley Powell and Chakhia Cole on consecutive trips down the floor put the Mountaineers ahead,15-12. WVU connected on seven of its first 11 shots from the floor.
West Virginia (16-3, 5-1 BE) then hit on its next four field goals, including two three-pointers for a 25-14 lead with 8:28 to go in the half.
WVU led 31-18 with 3:51 to go in the half as they were shooting 61 percent(13-21). The Mountaineers closed out the half with a Liz Repella three-pointer at the buzzer as the Hoyas trailed 40-20 at intermission.
Georgetown made 9-28 shots from the floor (32%) in the opening period but made just one field goal in the final 5:08.
"We just had a lack of execution on the offensive end today," said GU head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "You can't shoot 30 percent and expect to win. Give (West Virginia's LaQuita) Owens credit. She stepped up and hit some big shots."
Neither team could get in a rhythm in the second half with both teams shooting around 35 percent from the floor with 7:56 to go.
Twelve of Owens' 22 points came after halftime.
The Hoyas have now lost five straight games in the WVU Coliseum.
Georgetown hits the hardwood again on Wednesday, January 29 when the Hoyas travel to Marquette for an 8 p.m. EST BIG EAST contest.
