Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team announced its 2009-10 signings Friday morning. The Hoyas boast three student-athletes signed to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 season. GU brought in seven freshmen this past year and will have over half of the roster made up of underclassmen next season.
Highlighting the class is Ta'Shauna Rodgers, a 5'11" guard from Suffolk, Va., better known as "Suga." The product of King's Fork High School is the ninth-ranked player in the nation according to www.slamonline.com, the 20th by Mike Flynn's Blue Star Report and the 26th in the country according to www.hoopgurlz.com, she plays for Boo Williams Elite AAU squad out of Hampton, Va. As a junior, Rodgers won her second consecutive Southeastern District Player of the Year award and her third team MVP honor at King's Fork. She holds school records for career points, rebounds, assists and blocks with one year remaining. Rodgers completed this past AAU season ranked the second best player of the summer by hoopgurlz.com and winning Most Outstanding Player at Nike Nationals.
Sydney Wilson is another local player that will join the Hoyas in 2009-10. Wilson is a 6'5" forward from St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C. In her first season with the Cadets, she earned honorable mention All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honors and led the team in both scoring (9.6 PPG) and blocks (4.0 BPG). Wilson plays with the Fairfax Stars AAU squad, she ranks as the 42nd forward in the nation according to hoopgurlz.com and the 63rd player overall by the Blue Star Report.
Rounding out this year's class is Vanessa Moore, a 6'3" post player from Hacketstown, N.J. The product of Pope John XXIII High School plays with the NYC Gauchos AAU team. Moore averaged 15.0 PPG and 11.0 RPG as a junior at Pope John and ranks as the 38th post player by hoopgurlz.com as well as the 97th player overall by the Blue Star Report.
The Hoyas are coming off the best recruiting class in Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy's tenure, bringing in the sixth-ranked class in the country according to the Blue Star Report. Williams-Flournoy and her staff are once again looking at an outstanding group that received the 12th overall ranking by by the Blue Star Report and the 21st ranking overall by the All-Star Girls Report giving them the best recruiting class in the BIG EAST according to the Blue Star Report.
Georgetown will open up the season this Sunday as the squad travels to Jacksonville State for a 3 p.m., tilt.
