- The Georgetown University men's and women's swimming & diving teams completed a long and rigorous weekend at the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va., earlier this evening. The women's team earned a fifth-place finish while the men's squad finished sixth at the three-day event. After this weekend's event, 31 swimmers and divers have qualified for the BIG EAST Championships, matching last season's total.
Victor Lopez-Cantera (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) set a new school record in the 200 butterfly, winning the consolation final in 1:53.86. He led a quartet of Hoyas in the event as Greg Germain (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep), Trevor Kosmo (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos) and Keenan Timko (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) all qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. On the women's side, Kristen Pratt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) finished fourth overall with a time of 2:08.57.
In the 200 breaststroke, Ray Zomerfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) won the consolation final with a GU top-10 time of 2:11.96. A trio of Hoyas followed him with BIG EAST Championship qualifying times, Thomas Graham (Washington, D.C./St. Albans), Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif./Damien) and Alex Hanson (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker). On the women's side, 19 Katherine Lee (New York, N.Y./Spence) swam a season best 2:31.68.
Kelly Donlin (Harrison, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart) achieved a GU top-10 time in the 200 backstroke and also set the freshman record with her performance this evening (2:11.20). Five Hoyas advanced on the men's side to the 200 backstroke finals. Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) finished fifth overall with a time of 1:53.36, while the other four participants swam season best times in the event. James LiVolsi (Scotch Plains, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Wes Going (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High) attained their times in the consolation finals and Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Germain accomplished them in the bonus final.
In the 100 freestyle, Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) finished seventh overall with a personal best 52.78. Her time also moved her up to second place on the GU all-time list. Mallory Kiplinger (Darien, Conn./Darien) advanced to the consolation finals and finished fifth in that event with a time of 53.43. On the men's side, Robert Gokey (Minot, N.D./Minot) qualified for the BIG EAST Championships with a 48.30 in the bonus final.
The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), Stark, Donlin and Kiplinger swam to a fourth-place time of 3:33.41 in the final and two divers, Caitlin Karniski (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and Rebecca Jenkinson Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) finished fourth and seventh respectively, in the finals of the three meter dive.
Finally, Chris Finnegan (Garden City, N.J./Garden City) achieved a spot in the BIG EAST Championships with a freshman record time of 16:43.63 in the men's 1650 freestyle.
