Hail to the Hall

February 20, 2008

The Georgetown Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1953. Fifty-five years later, on February 2 of this year, the University welcomed home a distinguished group of individuals and honored them as the most recent class of inductees to the Athletic Hall. This upscale affair was held on campus at the Leavey Student Center, where the Hall of Fame gallery was formally opened in 1994.

Having spent much of the five weeks prior to the ceremony immersed in and writing about their past athletic accomplishments and their lives since, it was a real treat for me to spend some time with the five record-breaking athletes and one coach/administrator who were recognized.

The membership of the Hall to which this year's names are added, is impressive. Nineteen sports are now represented. The oldest (Michael Mahoney - baseball) and youngest (Catherine Taylor - volleyball) members of the Hall are both from the class of '89, one hundred years apart.

Here is a look at the six inductees (click on photo to read bio):

Kevin King `85 is the fiftieth athlete in the 117-year history of track and field to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Catherine Taylor `89 is the third athlete in the more than 40-year history of volleyball to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Reggie Williams `87 is the thirty-second athlete in the 101-year history of basketball to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Marianne Sullivan `87 is the first athlete in the 48-year history of field hockey to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Joe Lang is the 22nd coach/official in the 139-year history of intercollegiate athletics to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Paul Murphy `85 is the second athlete in the 45-year history of lacrosse to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame
