Catherine J. Taylor C'89

February 2, 2008

Catherine Taylor came to Georgetown from Brooklyn, NY with impressive credentials. In addition to being named MVP in both volleyball and basketball at Midwood High School, she led her volleyball team to division championship titles in two consecutive years. She also trained for six months in Japan with the Japan Volleyball Association as well as playing with the Big Apple Volleyball Club and the Bergen Volleyball Club. But it was at the World Volleyball Training Camp one summer that she met her future Georgetown volleyball coach.

Arriving on campus in the fall of 1985, Cathy's impact for the Hoyas was immediate. As a freshman, she led the team in games played, kills, service aces, and solo blocks. She also help to guide the Hoyas to the championship of the First Annual Hoya Invitational and to a final record of 21-17, tripling the win total from the previous year. Playing under coaches Steve Henry and Kin Ng, Cathy was named the BIG EAST South Division Rookie of the Year.

Cathy was a dominating force at the net, controlling play with her killing and blocking abilities and setting a new record on the Hilltop for career kills. She is still the second place all-time leader in that category with 1,755 kills. Cathy was the first Hoya to be selected to compete at the U.S. Olympic Festival and is one of only two individuals ever to be named to the Big East all-tournament team three times. During her career, she also netted several BIG EAST Athlete of the Week and numerous all-tournament team honors.

As the leader of the Hoya offense during her time on the Hilltop, Cathy still ranks in the Georgetown record books with the fourth most kills (519) and third most solo blocks (76) in a single season. She is also credited as the second all-time Georgetown leader in kills (1755), fifth in service aces (135) and second in solo blocks (223).

Cathy's volleyball experiences were complimented by an enjoyable academic experience and social environment at Georgetown. In the process, she formed life-long friendships before graduating in 1989 with a degree in psychology. She was not done with schooling though. After earning a masters degree in education from Long Island University, Cathy began teaching special needs children in the New York City public school system.

Volleyball has played an important role in shaping Cathy's life. In 1988, she met her future husband at a tournament in Virginia. Today, she and spouse Eric Gould live in Ridgewood, New Jersey with their four children: Julia (15), Taylor (12), Elyssa (10), and Ethan (7). Their children all share their parents' enthusiasm for sports and have shown interest in volleyball. Daughter Julia recently completed her first volleyball season as a starter on her high school varsity squad.

Catherine Taylor is the third athlete in the sport of volleyball at Georgetown to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
