Marianne E. Sullivan B'87

February 2, 2008

Field hockey, first played on the Hilltop in 1960 as an intercollegiate sport, evolved over the next 20 years from an extracurricular activity to a varsity program within the Department of Athletics. In 1983, a young woman from Watchung, NJ arrived at Georgetown who would add true legitimacy to the field hockey fortunes of the Hoyas.

The youngest of six children, Marianne Sullivan was a three-year starter on her high school hockey team and a New Jersey state all-star selection. Her initial ambition for college athletics at Georgetown was to have low-key experience. However, Marianne Sullivan has never done anything half-hearted. She became a dominating force on the field, possessing such a powerful shot, even her own teammates wouldn't want to practice with her.

Under the guidance of head coach Sandie Inglis, Marianne and her teammates spent summers at USA Field Hockey development camps. Coach Inglis moved her to midfield and to first stroker. From there, she began to score in bunches. As a sophomore, Marianne led the team in goals and points and was named to the Southeast Region All-America Team. That year, the team won the 1984 Washington Colleges Association Field Hockey Tournament. She also led the team in scoring as a senior. Marianne finished her career with 29 goals and 11 assists for a total of 69 points, establishing single season and career scoring records that have since been surpassed by only one other player.

Marianne led her team to 34 victories during her career, the most wins in the history of the program. During her career, she was selected three times to represent Georgetown at the Nationals, the all-star invitational field hockey tournament held annually at end of the season.

While earning a degree in accounting from the School of Business, Marianne served as president of the Accounting Society. In addition, she took on a time-consuming job as chief financial officer of the student-run Corp in Healy basement. Faced with carry-over debt and substantial impending rent increases, Marianne made tough business decisions and imposed the financial discipline that helped to save the Corp from bankruptcy. These experiences at Georgetown subsequently gave shape to her own professional career. Upon graduating with a 3.2 average, she accepted a position with KPMG, one of eight offers she received from the Big Eight accounting firms at the time.

At KPMG, Marianne started at the bottom and rose to the position of Audit Manager. Since 1992, she has worked for Fannie Mae, where as Senior Vice President, she is responsible for front-end housing credit.

Marianne lives in Bethesda, Maryland with her partner Debbie, their daughters Tori (6), Teagan and Quinn (twins 3½) and son Nate (17 months). She is a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she serves as chair of both the finance committee and the parish endowment fund.

Marianne Sullivan is the first athlete in the 48-year history of field hockey at Georgetown to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
