Feb. 24, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team cruised past the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 13-2 win. The victory at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C. was the first of the 2008 season for the Hoyas.

The Blue and Gray pounded out 17 hits and scored all 13 of their runs before Davison was able to get on the board. On the day, five Hoyas recorded multiple hits, highlighted by Erick Fernandez's (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) four knocks, while five players scored two runs apiece. Three players had multi-RBI games, including Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) with four and Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) with three.

Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) earned the win, throwing seven innings and allowing four hits while striking out five Wildcats. Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) pitched the eighth, striking out two batters and Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) closed it out for the Hoyas.

Leading 1-0, the Hoyas knocked in five runs during the second inning to take control of the contest. The first tallies in the inning occurred when Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) delivered his only hit of the game, an infield single to shortstop. On the play, Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) scored from third and an errant throw plated Billy Henig (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel). A single from Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) put runners on the corners and a wild pitch allowed Begin to come home for a 4-0 Hoya lead. During the same at-bat, Lamont blasted the first GU homerun of the season, a two-run shot.

Leading 6-0, Georgetown blew the game completely open with a four-run fifth inning. Consecutive walks and a wild pitch to start the inning allowed Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College High School) to record a RBI despite grounding out on the play. The next batter, Fernandez, delivered a run-scoring single to center and Elliott closed the scoring with a two-run double to left field.

Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday, February 26 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy.
