Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in three events last weekend. The Hoyas competed in the Fifth Annual John Jackson Memorial Team Race Regatta on Sunday, March 2. The first women's regatta was held at the College of Charleston and the No. 1 FJ's Conference Championship South Qualifier at Old Dominion University was held.
The John Jackson Regatta is named after John T. Jackson Georgetown, '03, who was a member of the Hoya sailing team. John passed away in a tragic accident in Chicago the summer after he graduated.
One round robin was completed on Sunday featuring the top four teams from the qualifying rounds at Navy and Georgetown. Racing started out with a light and shifty WNW wind which ended up shifting to the East and filling in to about 5-8 mph. Competitors raced in 18 FJ's with full colored sails and six 420's. Thanks to the umpiring crew of Jeff Borland, Christine Accettella, Dave Pyron, Matt Jones, Andrew Cole for volunteering their time, helping to make sure the racing was both fun and fair.
On Saturday eight colleges competed at Georgetown and eight at Navy. The top four schools from each venue competed in the Finals at Georgetown on Sunday while the bottom four schools competed at Navy.
